Final Project-Initial Ideas

July 21, 2007 at 9:27 am (Uncategorized)

My initial thought for the final project is designing a identity site. Bet you all did not see that coming, me being a graphic designer and all. :)
What I struggle with most is the beginning, what should it look like? What design best represents me? How do I begin? All of these questions seem overwhelming to me, only because it is for me; and in this technology driven world, you have to have an identity site. So, I plan to tackle this head-on and conquer this monster.

I will begin to do some research on sites for designers, and begin sketching out some ideas and work on color schemes. That is where I am starting for now, I will keep you posted on my progress.

It’s ok not to know where to start, which is where the research helps. I find ideas in looking at others work, not so much doing what they did, but just being aware of sites that attract me and what was it that created the attraction – could be a metaphor used, color or mood of the site, sometimes unique typography. So research with your “feelings” and “emotions” on sensitive, so you become aware of what makes you feel like you! Be open and don’t worry about creating the best ever – concentrate on creating what communicates who you are. Another aspect of portfolio sites is that you want the imagery of the portfolio pieces to stand out, so don’t over-design the site in the process!

So is this an identity site for yourself? If so, do you have some logos already created that you could show?

A logo for myself? Not necessarily, Logos from my classes? Those are currently in progress, and should be ready to show by the end of this class. I think as I begin to research sites and discover what mine will be, the logo thing, “my branding”, will fall neatly into place.:)

I think this is something you can definitely do. I myself am going to tackle something I have never done. I think its a great idea and you will have no trouble being a graphic designer and such. Look at how other sites used typogography to their benefit , color, etc.

I’m in the same boat as you, so I completely understand. We graphic designers can band together for this quarter to help each other discover innovative ways to do our Identity sites.

I researched these in my Intro to Scripting Languages class, and the coolest one I found was http://www.okaydave.com. This guy’s site is VERY complex and VERY cool.

With identity site lots of people see to just use their name for the name of the site i not saying that that is a bad think it is an identity site. But maybe try to create something that plays off of your name. just to give you an example my initials are MRD so i was playing are with MR. Deleon for branding just and idea.

Identity sites are tough because they have to showcase your own unique style, but yet show that you are diverse in your art as well. I think that overall, the most important thing is to capture your personality, and create something you are proud to show. I’m a little stumped on dividing my portfolio into subcategories and what to label the links–of course, there are the obvious ones…logos, 3D design (which we will soon tackle)…and do you say “print,” “branding” (but then doesn’t most our work include some sort of branding)…”annual reports”…..ugh, I don’t know. Just curious how you are planning on labeling you sections. See you tomorrow.

The beginning is always the hardest part for me too! Trying to figure out the best way to show off my skills in an easy to understand way can be quite hard… especially when you are designing for yourself!! I know for me it takes a lot for me to be satisfied with my design… there’s always something more I could add or change. :) Good Luck!
